Peggy Sue Wright was born in Butcher Hollow. Like her older sister Loretta, Peggy had a natural talent for singing country music. She began traveling with Loretta’s Road Show and the two talented sisters began to collaborate in writing songs. Among the songs they wrote were “Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind) and “Love Whatcha Got at Home.” Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’ was recognized in CMT’ s 100 Greatest Country Songs in the Top 50 and number three in CMT’s Top Drinking Songs.
In 1969, Peggy Sue released her debut single, “I’m Dynamite” on the Decca label. This Loretta written composition became a Top 10 hit.
Peggy Sue, married to Doug Well, had one child, Doletta Gail Wells. Doletta was a name Peggy created by combining the names of her friend Doyle Wilbur of the famous Wilburn Brothers and her sister Loretta. Peggy Sue Wright now makes her home in Hendersonville, Tennessee. She currently sings backing vocals for her younger sister, Crystal Gayle. |
